The Dove Foundation is a Grand Rapids based nonprofit established in 1991 to promote “family-friendly entertainment” through the lens of Judeo/Christian values with a mission “to encourage and promote the creation, production, distribution and consumption of wholesome family entertainment.” The group has a variety of programs including providing “Dove Family-Approved” seals films that earn its approval, its own movie channel, online movie reviews, overnight movie programs and film festivals for youth, and extensive market research campaigns. The organization uses aggressive telemarketing to conduct surveys and market films earning the Dove seal, with the state of Missouri finding that the Dove Foundation’s marketing campaign violated state “No Call” laws. According to Russ Bellant’s The Religious Right in Michigan Politics, the group also has tried not only to label films but also to get film studios to edit their films to confirm to Dove’s standards.
