Alliance Defense Fund

The Alliance Defense Fund is a Christian legal firm founded to defend “family values” and work to counter the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in an effort to “win back the judiciary” and to “restore religious liberty” (source). The group defines its three major issue areas as “guarding the sanctity of human life” including opposing public funding of abortion, opposing all forms of abortion, defending free speech rights for pro-life activists, supporting parental consent laws for abortions, and defending health professionals “right of conscience; the “protection family values” which includes working to prevent same-sex marriage, keeping gays from serving in the military, keeping gay couples from adopting children, opposing “explicit” sex education programs in schools, and supporting internet filters; and “defending religious freedom” by working to file lawsuits to prevent the removal of Christian symbols from government buildings documents, and monuments, fighting efforts to ban public prayer in schools, working to secure Christians equal access to public facilities open to other groups, and securing the right of Christians to express their faith in the workplace (source). The Alliance Defense Fund has coordinated over 400 lawyers and 125 right-wing organizations to work to implement the conservative Christian ideologies of its financial supporters (source). The group was founded by several powerful religious right figures including D. James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Ministries, Reverend James Dobson of Focus on the Family, Don Wildmon of the American Family Association, Bill Bright of Campus Crusade for Christ, Larry Burkett of Christian Financial Concepts, and Marlin Maddoux of International Christian Media.

The Alliance Defense Fund has been funded by the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation, the Edgar and Elsa Prince Foundation, and the Jay and Betty Van Andel Foundation.
