Last month, Grand Rapids was one of many cities hosting protests for gay rights in the wake of the passage of the anti-gay Proposition 8 in California.

Now, the organization that coordinated those protests–JoinTheImpact.com–is calling for nationwide candlelight vigils on December 20, 2008 to continue the momentum. The group is encouraging people to plan vigils for 5pm in “commercial districts” such as shopping malls and financial centers. Protestors are being asked not bear signs or chant and instead simply hold a candle while wearing a “Second Class Citizen” shirt.

Currently, there is no protest planned for Grand Rapids. The last one was organized primarily through the JoinTheImpact.com and Facebook websites, so it wouldn’t take too much effort for someone to organize one.

If you do, let us know in the comments or submit the details to our events calendar.
