On Friday, the Starbucks Workers Union announced a new campaign targeting coffee chain Starbucks. The union is calling on Starbucks to honor the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. and to pay its workers a holiday premium for working on MLK Day. The union argues that Starbucks should demonstrate its commitment to “racial diversity” by paying the same holiday premium that it does on the Fourth of July and New Year’s. In a press release accompanying the announcement, the Union points out that despite its commitment to “racial diversity” only 15% of Starbucks executives are of color compared to 30% of its baristas.
Locally, the Grand Rapids Starbucks Workers Union has produced a flyer that it is distributing at area Starbucks to customers and baristas.
