A new report by Media Mouse, Aiming to Please: A Look at Military Contracts Awarded to Grand Rapids Area Companies, examines a wide array of military contracts awarded to local companies. Whereas the local corporate media has occasionally run stories on local military contracts in terms of the positive contributions such companies are making to “the war on terror,” the Media Mouse report was written in order to serve as a catalyst for action. Media Mouse hopes that the report will be considered as a possible means of providing a strategic focus to the local antiwar and peace communities.
The report documents military contracts awarded to Borisch Manufacturing, D&M Midwest, Eaton Aerospace, Evans Tempcon, Grand Valley State University, L-3 Communications Systems, Smiths Industries Aerospace, and Wolverine World Wide. While only presenting a representative sample of contracts awarded to each of the aforementioned companies the report details the contributions of local companies to a variety of military systems including the M1A1 Abrams tank, the Stryker armored combat vehicle, the F-15 Eagle, the F-16 Falcon, the F-18 Hornet and the UH-60 Black Hawk–all of which have been used, either directly or indirectly, against civilians in Iraq.
