Local Action for Equal Marriage Rights for Gays and Lesbians

A local activist from Grand Valley State Universtiy has contacted Media Mouse looking for help in spreading the word about an upcoming action in support of equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians. Media Mouse is happy to oblige. Here is what the action organizer writes:

This Friday (the 20th) at 10:00 a hopefully large group of us are planning an act of civil disobedience at the Kent County Clerk. We’re going to gather in same-sex pairs and request marriage licenses as a protest against the current anti-gay restrictions on marriage.

We’d like as many people as possible to attend this demonstration in same-sex pairs and, one couple at a time, request licenses. We’re suggesting that people gather their own groups and leave Grand Valley around 9:30 to arrive downtown by 10:00. We’re also hoping most people will print off the marriage forms and bring the $20 fee, just for the hell of it. Forms, information, and directions can all be found here:

We’ll be contacting the local newspaper, tv stations, radio, etc. We won’t begin contacting the media until late Wednesday and Thursday, just so the event is given more immediate coverage and attention. Anyone who cares to contact any media on their own Thursday should feel free as well.

Most everyone who plans on attending now is straight. Remember, discrimination affects everyone, so gay and lesbian people, their friends and family, and compassionate and active individuals should all have an interest.

Please spread the word, find a fiance (or attend alone and find one there), and we’ll see you Friday.
