Senators Question CAFTA at Finance Committee Hearing

At yesterday’s Senate Finance Committee on CAFTA, some Senators questioned the agreement including Senator Kent Conrad of North Dakota who charged CAFTA negotiators with “negoitating away another industry,” a reference to sugar producers who are strongly opposed to CAFTA. Two other Democrats also indicated their likely opposition to the deal. Acting US Trade Representative Peter Allgeier stated that “without presidential leadership, this agreement is going to face a very steep uphill battle,” reflecting the strong opposition to CAFTA, even among some Republicans in Congress.
